The application of CCD arrays to astronomical observations is considered. The operating principles of CCDs are introduced, the problems of array construction and data storage are indicated, and the advantages of CCD dynamic range and quantum efficiency are weighed against the higher resolution and information content of modern photographic plates. Digital image-processing techniques are shown to permit automatic correction for dark current, cosmic background, and the characteristics of individual CCDs or particular columns or rows (using flat-fielding and residual-pattern removal). The observational routine of CCD-camera astronomy is described, and sample images are provided.
