Evidence of saturation of previous visual extinction estimates in the dust lane has been found by drift scanning J, H and K passband mapping of the central 10 arcmin region of NGC 5128. It is shown that the near-IR light is dominated by reddened stars of the elliptical component of the galaxy, and the apparent asymmetry of the dust lane across the nucleus for the case of near-IR radiation is confirmed. Luminosity profiles of the galaxy in K follow the de Vaucouleurs law well, and indicate little radial change in (V-K) across the bulk of the elliptical component.
