It is confirmed that E galaxies follow a relation between luminosity and dispersion in which L varies as sigma to the fourth, by means of Fourier quotient method which yielded velocity dispersions in 19 luminous E and cD galaxies and thereby clarified the dynamical difference between these morphological types. E galaxy mass-to-light ratios averaged 6.5 + or - 0.7, while those of the brightest cluster members averaged 9.9 + or - 0.8. It is also determined that the difference in magnitudes between a brightest cluster member and an elliptical of identical velocity dispersion is correlated, in a manner consistent with galaxy merger models, with the galaxy's core radius and central surface brightness. A merger model that reproduces these effects and increases the galaxy mass-to-light ratio as mergers progress is constructed.
