A study is presented of quasar Fe II emission blends at 2100, 2500, 2950, 3200, 4570, and 5190-5320 A, as well as Mg II 2798 A, the Balmer lines and continuum, and the power law spectral index, for the cases of 38 quasars and high-redshift Seyfert I galaxies. Although a comparison restricted to relative strengths among the UV Fe II blends, which would be insensitive to column density effects, yields blend strengths that agree with predicted strengths from optically thick, Fe II emission collisional excitation models, it is shown that synthetic spectra based on the Phillips (1977) and Kwan and Krolik (1979) Fe II calculations disagree with observed quasar spectra. An ad hoc modification of predicted multiplet strengths, which forces a better fit, leads to the conclusion that future, correct models of quasar Fe II emission should include low-lying doublet terms and terms near 8.0 eV, and consider electron temperatures above 10,000 K.
