The Bruzual and Kron (1979) evolutionary and K-corrections are used to predict the optical appearance of galaxies over a range of redshifts and magnitudes, showing that nearly all galaxies with J values lower than about 25 are resolved in 1-arcsec seeing. The fact that galaxies with large redshifts are more diffuse in appearance than those at small z values causes the most distant galaxies at any magnitude level to be missed, and may cause the luminosities of detected galaxies to be underestimated depending on the algorithm employed. Although Space Telescope observations are expected to resolve nearly all galaxies at J values lower than about 27.5, several factors may make them less effective than certain ground-based CCD observations in the optical detection of distant galaxies. It is noted that most conclusions reached are unaffected by changes in assumed cosmology.
