We examine an infrequently used period searching strategy which we find to be well suited to searching for non-sinusoidal oscillations in small sparsely sampled data sets. The method is introduced informally, by way of an example, and the reader is referred to more rigorous studies done in the past. Essentially, a series of M harmonics is fitted to the data by least squares at each of a number of test frequencies ν. The quality of the fit at frequency ν is measured by RSS(ν), the sum of the squares of the residuals after the fit has been subtracted from the observed values. The results are used to produce a residualgram [a plot of RSS(ν) versus ν], the analogue of a periodogram. The residualgram is more computationally expensive to produce than the periodogram, but it has the advantage of being considerably easier to interpret in some instances. The use of the method is illustrated with examples using data for two variable stars.
