Most of the quasar absorption lines are believed to be formed in the intervening material lying along the line-of-sight to the quasars. These lines, therefore, provide a unique probe for understanding the high redshift universe. The information obtained from the large amount of observational data of these lines, now available, is discussed with particular emphasis on the halo models and H II region models for metal line absorbers, chemical evolution of high redshift galaxies and the properties of Lyman alpha lines from high resolution data.
