Leger et al. (1981) measured the refractive index of amorphous ice at low temperature (77 K) and pressure over the whole infrared spectrum. These measurements are used to compute the relevant optical efficiencies of grains, which in turn are incorporated into a simple radiation model and compared with astronomical observations to deduce the amount of ice in the nebula. The deduced values are based on hypothetical values of grain composition geometry. It is suggested that the model be improved by considering core optical properties and the presence of impurites in the mantle; the effect of temperature variations on the optical index of ice should also be investigated in the 10-100 K range.
