Observations of Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds by Butler (1976, 1978) and of field Cepheids by Pel (1980) are used to support the theory that some variable stars do show large and small amplitude oscillations at the same frequency, for the same macroscopic characteristics. A simple nonlinear one-zone model is presented, mimicking the behavior of the outer layers of the pulsating star. This model represents the layers of the star situated above the He(+) ionization zone. This layer is excited by an underlying pulsating interior, the behavior of which is dependent on the opacity temperature derivative and the temperature gradient. A comparison of the resonance curves and the amplitude-period diagram of actual variables indicates a hysteresis effect. This hysteresis is probably responsible for the two amplitude regimes of Cepheids close to the blue border of the instability strip.
