A new method to represent a dust grain with a smooth surface is proposed
in the framework of the discrete dipole approximation (DDA). A new test
of validity of the DDA, using this method, is presented. Also, it is
shown that surface roughness dramatically affects the scattering diagram
and the degree of linear polarization of the scattered light.
