Two statistical tests for the intrinsic shape of elliptical galaxies - based on the correlation of surface brightness and velocity dispersion with Hubble type - are reanalyzed in light of a new set of velocity dispersion data. It is shown that such tests are capable of determining, in principle, both the shapes of elliptical galaxies, as well as the dependence of surface brightness and velocity dispersion on intrinsic ellipticity. For the present sample of 61 galaxies, the surface brightness data are ambiguous, while the velocity data are consistent with the oblate and inconsistent with the prolate hypotheses at the one-sigma level. Neither hypothesis can be ruled out with confidence, however. If galaxies are oblate, the velocity data imply that nearly spherical galaxies have higher velocity dispersions than intrinsically flat ones.
