The range of Hill stability for the circular three-body problem is examined for the case when the larger body has a finite oblateness. Consideration is also given to a minimum value for the Jacobi constant of the smaller bodies. The examination is applied to the earth-moon system, the solar system, and binaries, including the inner planets, short-period comets, asteroids, and artificial satellites. The stability range was determined to be smaller for a retrograde than a direct orbit of the same size, implying that artificial satellites intended for long-term stationkeeping should be launched into direct orbits.
