The number of bulge X-ray sources per unit mass in M31 and in the galaxy is compared, as is the distribution of M31 field bulge X-ray sources to that of novae in the bulge of M31. It is assumed that the surface brightness distribution in the bulge reflects the mass surface density distribution. Some properties of globular X-ray sources are discussed, and the possibility that part of the field bulge sources in M31 are located in unidentified globular clusters is examined. Possible explanations for the observed luminosity characteristics of the sources are considered. Implications of the results for the formation mechanism of field bulge X-ray sources are discussed. An interpretation of the observed deficiency of novae in the central region of M31 with respect to both the bulge X-ray sources and the surface brightness distribution is given.
