The effects of magnetic fields and preshock turbulence on gravitational collapse and star formation behind shocks in interstellar clouds are considered. Three-dimensional collapse, and presumably star formation, is found to occur in the simple case of a uniform field without shocked layer turbulence, irrespective of field direction and with similar time scale over a broad range of physical conditions. Despite the probability of preshock turbulence, the rapid dissipation of turbulent energy occurring in the postshock layer lends realism to the present discussion of collapse within a layer having uniform magnetic threading. The greater degree of decoupling from the large scale turbulent energy to which a layer with perpendicular magnetic threading is subjected may cause such layers to be more efficient star formation sites.
