Exploiting the information deduced from the fit applied to the PDS scans of each cluster candidate in M31 listed by Battistini et al. (1980), and through a simulation made with the data known on the Galactic globulars, we have obtained two sets of homogeneous data on some basic parameters for a wide sample of clusters in the two systems including a significant number of X-ray clusters.
The following indications have been drawn:
(i) the globular clusters of M31 and the Galaxy show a close similarity in their mean optical properties;
(ii) M31 apparently has stronger and/or more numerous X-ray source globulars than expected. This discrepancy might be partially explained if the different size of the systems of clusters in the two galaxies and the differences in the dynamical interactions with the nuclei are considered;
(iii) small values of the projected galactocentric distances seem to be an important prerequisite for the presence of an X-ray source in clusters;
(iv) the incidence of X-ray sources in clusters increases with the central density, but the dependence is not particularly strong;
(v) the cluster data in M31 are consistent with the probability of the presence of an X-ray source scaling approximately with the integrated luminosity of the cluster;
(vi) high metallicity seems to be a common property of X-ray clusters in M 31, but this may be a consequence of the fact that clusters which have a higher incidence of sources due to the high central density and small galactocentric distance are also metal rich.
