We propose to obtain deep images of the extensive system of luminous blue arcs in the redshift 0.39 rich galaxy cluster Cl0024+16. There is strong evidence, based on available data from the ground, that these structures are the result of gravitational lensing of a faint blue background galaxy or galaxies by the cluster's deep potential well. The observational goal will be to map the variations in surface brightness and color within the arcs (which are typically about 1 arc second wide and several to ten arc seconds long). Because lensing preserves both quantities, these maps will provide strong additional constraints on detailed models of the event. The ultimate scientific goals would be to uniquely determine, or at least tightly constrain, the total (including dark) mass distribution in the cluster and to invert the lensing distortion to obtain a very high spatial resolution image of the distant background galaxies courtesy of this natural (Zwicky) telescope. For a variety of reasons, the Cl0024+16 system is among the most favorable cases for such a study among known luminous arc lens systems. If successful, such studies might profitably be extended to a few other objects in the future.
