We propose using the FOS to examine the sightlines of QSOs which lie fortuitously behind galaxies whose existence is already known, and whose properties are easily discerned. We have selected 7 QSOs background to galaxies with which to study the Lya, MgII and C~IV absorption cross-sections of modern-day galaxies using HST and the FOS. This number will provide a statistically significant set of sightlines through the disks and haloes of many types of galaxies situated in many types of environment. The number studied and the equivalent width limits achieved will facilitate a direct comparison with higher-redshift optical studies. We will also provide important information on the question of how galaxies contribute to the Lya forest lines now found at all redshifts.
