Young clusters provide us with an unique opportunity to study the process of stars formation and early stellar evolution in a statistically significant manner. In particular, investigations and comparisons of the luminosity functions of very young clusters should provide important constraints on the shape and universality of the IMF. In my talk, I will present and compare the near-infrared luminosity functions for several nearby clusters. In addition, evolutionary models for the near-infrared luminosity functions of such clusters will be used to constrain their star formation history.
