Scientific paper

A conference on the solar corona elicited papers which emphasized aspects of the corona always present, i.e., the quiet corona, although some papers related to solar activity and transient phenomena. Physical properties studied include velocity fields, abundance variations and Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Also studied and presented were efforts to understand or predict the coronal properties in terms of energy and momentum balance. Some new observations are presented which show the corona to be very complex and very dynamic over a wide range of time-scales. Also, some new insights are presented on old problems including the three dimensional structure of coronal streamers, the variation of element abundance between different solar structures, microflares as a mechanism for coronal heating, and the possible existence of hot coronae in low collision rate atmospheres without the need for a heating mechanism.
