Most cosmological models predict the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background to be a random process whose details (statistical distribution, angular power spectrum) reflect the physics of the very early universe. I will discuss recent analyses of the COBE DMR sky maps and the separation of cosmic signals from foreground Galactic emission. On large angular scales, the DMR data are consistent with the hypothesis that the CMB is a single realization of a random Gaussian field whose angular power spectrum follows a simple power law. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) is responsible for the design, development, and operation of the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). Scientific guidance is provided by the COBE Science Working Group.
