It is shown that unresolved circumstellar scattering in YSOs can lead to distortions in their near-infrared colours even in a simple spherical-envelope approximation. The wavelength dependence of the scattering can give rise to apparent near-infrared excesses and can result in significant underestimates of the optical depth in the envelope. Implications for YSO studied in the near-infrared are briefly discussed.
