The possibilities for detecting distant, highly reddened cepheids as well as OB star clusters and associations in the surveys is considered and the value of such work for galactic structure problems is outlined. It is convenient to begin by discussing cepheids in some detail, primarily because their distances can be determined more accurately than for any other single object and there is hope of detecting many distant ones as a result of the near-infrared surveys. The advantages of cepheids are discussed and the follow up observations that will be necessary for cepheid candidates found in the surveys. The selection of cepheid candidates will then be discussed. The possibility of detecting new OB star clusters and associations and also supergiants are also discussed.
