A cometary outburst is an unexpected flare-up in the brightness of a comet, the brightness normally increasing by 2-3 mag but on occasions by up to 5. The general characteristics of cometary outbursts and the suggested mechanisms put forward to explain their occurrences are reviewed. The 'super-outbursts' that occur when comets split apart are briefly discussed. Special reference is made to the way in which the recent observations of the nucleus of P/Halley have affected views concerning the possible causative mechanisms.
