This thesis presents the results of an extensive search for star-forming galaxies at high redshift. By imaging through narrow-band filters ($3-5000\, {\rm km\,s}^{-1}$) in the near-infrared $K$-band, this survey is sensitive to the rest-frame optical emission lines at $z>2$, which are indicators of star formation. Previous searches have mainly been based on Lyman-$\alpha$, but are probably fundamentally flawed as this resonantly-scattered line is selectively quenched, and is known to be weak or absent in many star-forming galaxies at high redshift.
