Variations in the density of the Martian middle atmosphere, in the altitude range between 20 and 50 km, are a significant source of uncertainty for delivering a payload to any specific target on the surface of the planet. For example, the along-track axis of the estimated landing error ellipse for MER-A was about 70 km long and, in fact, MER-A landed about 25 km down-range from the center of that ellipse. The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is aiming for an error "ellipse" just 20 km in diameter, which would enable access to targets of high scientific interest. Results reported here represent a first step toward estimating the range of density variations that MSL could encounter above high-priority landing sites identified at a workshop held in Pasadena, California, May 31 to June 2, 2006.
