The last several years saw a great expansion of our horizon in the Universe as we search for galaxies at higher and higher redshift. The Subaru Deep Field (SDF) survey has played a central role in pushing the redshift limit, and a recent series of studies indicate that the number density of bright Ly(alpha) emitters (LAEs) is decreasing substantially from z ~ 5.7 to 7. This strong evolution with the bright-end of the Ly(alpha) luminosity function (LF) is much faster than that seen with the rest-frame UV continuum LF, suggesting the possibility that at z=6-7 we are probing the tail end of the reionization epoch, where more abundant neutral IGM might extinguish Ly(alpha) emission preferentially compared to the UV continuum. Here, we propose to conduct a Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic follow-up of ~30 newly found z~7 galaxy candidates discovered through the dropout technique in the ultra-deep (29 hr) Subaru/Suprime-Cam z'-band image of the SDF. More spectroscopic identifications of z ~ 7 galaxies will enable us to constrain the bright end of the Ly(alpha)/UV LF better, and this will in turn allow us to examine whether the deficit of bright LAEs at z~ 7 is as severe as the previous studies suggest.
