The interaction of the infalling and escaping matter around galaxies generates areas of the warm/hot intergalactic medium with temperatures of 105-107 K. These high temperature regions emit X-rays that enhance the fluctuating component of the background. Variations in the background at angular scales of 0.5-8 arcmin are analyzed using XMM-Newton observations. The amplitude of the autocorrelation function generated by a non-uniform distribution of sources contributing to the background is discussed. An upper limit for the fluctuations due to the warm/hot component is obtained.
