Galaxies: Kinematics And Dynamics, Galaxies: Spiral
Scientific paper
The main aim of this paper is to show that by postulating the existence of a rotating and shrinking gaseous bulge with a magnetic field as envisaged, and given a rotation curve, a galaxy will have produced and maintained spiral arms during a reasonably long time, which in the case of M31, chosen for illustration, is of the order of 3x10(9) years. We conclude that differential rotation of a galaxy may be the very agent that produces spiral structure.
