The oceans have a major impact on global geodetic properties of the Earth. The changing distribution of mass within the oceans causes the Earth's gravitational field to change. By being exchanged with the solid Earth, fluctuations in the angular momentum of the oceans due to current and bottom pressure variations cause the Earth's rotation to change. Bottom pressure variations also change the load acting on the solid but not rigid Earth thereby causing the shape of the Earth to change. Of necessity global ocean models must be used to study these effects of the oceans and the ECCO models have been widely used for this purpose. In fact, ECCO is providing a valuable service to the geodetic community by making its relevant products available through the IERS Special Bureau for the Oceans, one of eight Special Bureaus that constitute the Global Geophysical Fluids Center of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), a service of both the International Association of Geodesy and of the International Astronomical Union. The impact of the oceans on global geodetic properties of the Earth will be reviewed in this presentation with examples drawn from studies that make use of the ECCO models.
