A simple four-stage model of the evolution of an AGN is proposed. Some
similarities between the variability of AGNs and X-ray binaries, and
between the jets of AGNs and of X-ray binaries are suggested. Some
limitations on variability studies as probes of the central engine are
pointed out, and the future of AGN monitoring is discussed.
