The results of multicolor observations of blazar S5 0716+714 carried out during 2001-2004 at the Astronomical Institute of St.Petersburg State University (AI SPbSU) are given. They have been analysed with the aim of investigating color variability. It is found that the spectral energy distribution of the variable source in the optical and near infrared bands is unchanged and may be fitted by a power law: F_ν ∝ ν^{-1.12}. Because of the high polarization often observed in the object the synchrotron nature of the variable source is undoubted.
