The abundance of the neon isotopes from seven natural gas sources has been determined. In order to obtain the necessary analytical data, neon was concentrated by a factor of approximately 2 × 10 6 and analysed by means of a mass spectrometer. As a check on the possibility of the neon isotopic abundance being altered by the concentration technique, which involved separation of the neon by solidification at 4.2°K, a mixture containing 106 ppm of neon (atmospheric source) in helium was prepared and subjected to the analytical procedures for isotopic abundance determinations; there was no evidence of "isotopic shift". A total of 93 isotopic assays of neon was made from five Bureau of Mines and two private sources of helium-bearing natural gases. The results indicated that the amounts of Ne 21 from the helium-bearing natural-gas sources were significantly higher than those from atmospheric neon ( et al ., 1965; and , 1965) and varied according to the source. Values compared to atmospheric neon for Ne 21 were higher by 45 to 500 per cent. (1954) suggested that nuclear reactions such as O 18 ( , n ) Ne 21 could explain the origin of the excess Ne 21 .
