We have discovered the long-sought far-side counterpart of the Expanding 3-kpc Arm of the Milky Way (Dame & Thaddeus 2008). While the discovery of the so-called Far 3-kpc Arm (F3A) is definitive, it was made with the CfA's southern 1.2 metre telescope, which has an 8.4' beam. We propose to map two sections of the F3A at much higher sensitivity and resolution with Mopra, in order to determine the Arm's overall structure and the properties of its component molecular clouds. These observations will have far-reaching implications for models of the Milky Way's dynamics, and of barred spiral galaxies in general. We propose to use the planned "fast-mapping" mode on a shared risk basis. If this new mode is not available, the more sensitive spectra resulting from normal OTF mapping will still be of great interest.
