We propose a southern sky rotation measure survey from 300 MHz to 900 MHz with the Parkes telescope. This survey forms a key part of the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS), a spectro-polarimetric survey of the diffuse polarized emission of the entire sky comprising six component surveys. The main science goals of the project are to improve our understanding of the morphology of the local MIM, the disk-halo transition, interstellar turbulence, the large scale Galactic magnetic field, and the origin of objects only seen in polarization. A new 300-900 MHz receiver will be used, designed and built for this survey. Results of a pilot study, carried out in September 2008, are reported. We ask for 1770 hours, spread over 5 terms, to map the sky between -87 deg and +20 deg declination.
