The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft entered its low altitude mapping orbit on February 4, 1999, and since then has been tracked continuously by the Deep Space Network (DSN). The radiometric tracking data and the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data have been used in the derivation of geopotential solutions to 80x80 in spherical harmonics. These new solutions revealed the geopotential of Mars in unprecedented detail. We now have tracking data from more than one year in Mars orbit. The most recent data - especially those collected in late 2000 and early 2001 were obtained when the MGS orbit orientation angle with respect to the line-of-sight (LOS) was optimum for gravity measurements. We have reprocessed all available MGS tracking data using the new 2001 Mars Cartography Working Group (MCWG) constants for the orientation of the Mars pole, the Mars rotation rate, and location of the prime meridian We also have incorporated other improvements in the MGS orbit modelling, including a new empirical thermosphere model of Mars for atmospheric drag modelling (Bruinsma and Lemoine, JGR submitted, 2001), and refinements to the MGS macromodel. We will report on new Mars geopotential solutions to 80x80 in spherical harmonics and possibly 90x90 using all available tracking data and more multi-arcs of MOLA crossver data. We will also assess the sensitivity of the current extensive MGS data to the K2 Love number, and the potential signature of Mars ephemeris error in the MGS data.
