The Mars Global Surveyor Spacecraft has returned image, compositional, and altimetry data that has substantially changed our understanding of the emplacement and of volcanic plains and small volcanic edifices on Mars. Several studies have suggested that geologically recent volcanism has been found in the Elysium Planitia, and perhaps the northern polar, regions. Additionally, numerous small volcanic edifices that were previously undetected are readily apparent in the topography data. This study uses combined topography and image data to characterize and model low volcanic shields and plains features. We find that our Elysium region volcanic flow sources from the topography agree with suggested water/volcanism sources proposed from other image studies. Globally, we see many more small plains-style features (channels and lava tubes) and small edifices than were previously mapped, suggesting that emplacement styles may not have included as much flood basalt emplacement as we thought. We also find that there is a pronounced dependence of several geometric shape parameters of the small shield edifices on latitude that is not symmetric between the northern and southern hemisphere, and that this dependence does not seem strongly dependent on apparent edifice age. We will discuss implications for water-volcanism interactions and the prevalence of plains-style volcanism and small edifices on Mars.
