This research presents our investigation of the infrared companion phenomenon in the T Tau and Haro 6-10 multiple systems based on spatially resolved photometry, narrow-band filter spectroscopy of the 3 micron water-ice absorption feature, and medium resolution 2-4 micron spectroscopy. For both of these systems, most of the water-ice absorption lies along the line of sight toward the infrared companion in the system, confirming that they are viewed through stronger extinction. We detect variability in the depth of the water-ice absorption feature toward T Tau S (the IRC), Haro 6-10 S and the Haro 6-10 IRC. We also find hydrogen Br-gamma in the spectra of all the stars, and H2 emission toward the three systems which show water-ice in absorption. Haro 6-10 S shows a tight correlation in Br-gamma and K-band flux variations. Our results suggest that the near IR variability exhibited by these stars is caused by a combination of changes in accretion rate and variable extinction along the line of sight to the stars.
