Comparison of Sr 87 / Sr 86 in xenoliths and their basaltic matrix at the time of formation of the Delegate breccia pipes shows that two of four xenoliths examined have an "accidental" origin. The major minerals of a granulite xenolith show variable Sr 87 abundances which are probably relict in part from a much older equilibrium, whereas those from an eclogite xenolith appear to register a time equal to or not more than 10 8 years prior to the pipe age. Alkali abundances measured in the total-rock cannot be accounted for by the alkali abundances measured in the major mineral phases, so that it is difficult to envisage the total-rook as chemically closed to Rb during pipe formation or for a lengthy period prior to this event.
