The phase speed of infinitesimal disturbances in a relativistic gas is shown to be less than the speed of light. The result is obtained by means of the kinetic theory of gases and is valid for any collision operator. The treatment applies, in particular, to the speeds of propagation of sound, shear, and heat waves. These waves are further shown to be damped.
