Deep space- and ground-based observations at optical and infrared wavelengths are used to establish statistical properties of the distant galaxy population. Results are extrapolated to guide setting design requirements and expected scientific returns of future wide-field imagers in space. Effects of cosmological surface brightness dimming are emphasized, and possibilities of identifying bright, high-redshift sources are assessed.
