It is shown that a considerable number of independent lines of observational evidence unambiguously imply the existence of a large, moderately dense, cool cloud of interstellar gas lying between the sun and Alpha Oph, an A5V star located 16.7 + or 0.8 pc away in the direction l = 32 deg, b = 23 deg. Several methods of estimating N(H I) to Alpha Oph, based on line absorption profiles and column densities, give essentially the same answer within experimental uncertainties. The peculiar -26 km/s heliocentric velocity of the dominant Ti II absorption feature suggests that the Alpha Oph spectral features are due to an interstellar cloud which may envelop the solar system. This cloud may also be responsible for the absorption seen in two other nearby stars.
