Velocity anisotropy plays an important role in determining the shapes of elliptical galaxies. It has until now been generally assumed that the isodensity surfaces of these galaxies have common principal axes. This assumption is consistent with observations of a number of ellipticals with isophote twists and radially varying ellipticities. In the present investigation, it is argued that this interpretation of the observations may, however, not describe the general case. A description is provided of two model stellar systems which have intrinsic principal axes twists over astronomically interesting time-scales
