The fractional energy distribution N(E) is studied for the case of a one-dimensional gravitational system and the results are compared with those of Binney (1982) concerning the importance of the fractional energy distribution N(E) for the fundamental understanding of the structure and the formation of galaxies. It is found that for a one-dimensional system, the equilibrium fractional energy distribution N(E) is effectively well approximated by a Boltzmann factor. However, it is shown that N(E) can in no way be considered to be conserved in the course of the evolution of the system since it varies violently as the virial ratio in the violent relaxation phase and, after as many as 10 crossing times, continues to oscillate strongly.
