A possible reason which explains Freeman's (1970) discovery that the extrapolated central surface brightness of spiral galaxies is approximately constant is presented. It is proposed that this constancy can be simply explained if the galaxies contain a spheroidal component which dominates the light in their outer isophotes. Calculations of an effective central surface brightness are found to indicate a wide spread of values. This result is determined to require either a wide spread in disc properties or significant spheroidal components or probably both.
