The MK standard HD 48434 is reclassified as B0 Ib, from its original MK type of B0 III, on the basis of new high-dispersion spectroscopic observations. This revised classification is demonstrated to be consistent with the star's likely membership in the association Mon OB2, and with the lack of any detectable evidence from radial velocities for duplicity of the sytem. A newly-determined radial velocity of +33.7 (±0.4) km s-1 is presented for this star, and the need for a new spectroscopic standard for spectral type B0 III is discussed.
