Recent evidence suggests that the Beta Regio equatorial highland, generally considered to be a plume-related structure, was emplaced over a relatively short period of time in the recent Venus history (100 - 400 m.y.). The rapid uplift of Beta Regio strongly suggests a strong plume coming from great depth and places an upper limit on the effective viscosity of the lithosphere (around 10^25 Pa s). The uplift is not only thermal but also dynamic and is accelerated because of flow in the lower part of the lithosphere. At higher effective viscosity of the lithosphere, the uplift of Beta Regio is mainly controlled by thermal thinning of the lithosphere and takes about 3 b.y., inconsistent with geological observations. Our results also suggest that to satisfy not only the gravity, topography and rheological constraints but also the timing of the formation of Beta Regio, convection should be substantially more vigorous than previously thought and the plumes probably come all the way from the core-mantle boundary.
