Earlier apodized pupil Lyot coronagraphs (APLC) have been studied and developed to enable high-contrast imaging for exoplanet detection and characterization with nowadays ground-based telescopes. With the current interest in the development of the next generation of telescopes; the future extremely large telescopes (ELTs), alternative APLC designs involving multistage configurations appear attractive. Multistage APLC can in principle provide deeper contrast, and/or to relax the inner working angle (IWA). The interest of such designs for application to ELTs is studied, and the analysis presented probes the behavior of the performance offered by such configuration to inherent error sources of a coronagraphic large telescope. Additionally, a first laboratory experiment comparing a single to a two stages APLC in the near infrared (H-band) is presented.
