Pudovkin et al. (1981) have proposed a model for the interaction of the solar wind and the earth's magnetosphere which makes it possible to quantitatively evaluate a series of parameters in the region of field-line reconnection. In the present paper this model is used to calculate the electric field strength at the magnetopause and the difference of potentials across the polar caps. A comparison with experimental data demonstrates the valdity of the model.
