It is shown that the ratio of the total to the selective absorption and the ratio of color excesses in galaxies determined by the method of surface photometry depend on the characteristics of the absorbing matter and its location in the object being measured. Correct values are obtained in the case when the absorbing matter is located in front of the object and fully screens the section being measured through a diaphragm of the given size.
