Soft Gamma-ray Repeater (SGR) is a hotly pursued topic in recent year. This paper is an introduction to the progress on the research of SGR. Basic observational properties are reviewed. The main observed characteristics of SGRs are their repeated bursts in soft gamma-rays and persistent periodical X-ray radiation. Several theoretical models of SGRs are briefly introduced, among them the magnetar (neutron star with ultra-strong magnetic field) model accounts for their observations fairly well.
